About Us

UJS is a combined secondary religious school between the Reform congregation of Temple Emanuel and the Conservative congregation of Ahavas Israel and B'nai Israel of Muskegon.  Our enrollment ranges from Gan Katan (2-4 year olds) through 12th grade.

We have a large staff of teachers and high school madrichim. On Sunday, class is held from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and school is located at Temple Emanuel, while the midweek Hebrew program is held on Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. until 6 p.m. with additional enrichment class from 6-6:30 p.m. and is housed at Congregation Ahavas Israel.  There is an additional site for midweek Hebrew in Holland, MI.

The United Jewish School will:

  • Encourage all children to work together for the benefit of the greater Jewish community of Grand Rapids and the Jewish world.
  • Use the shared human resources from both congregations for the benefit of all our children.
  • Share financial resources from both congregations and identify new streams of revenue for continuous improvement and benefit.
  • Allow our children and parents to get to know one another and learn about our denominational similarities, differences, and approaches to life. We want our children to respect all Jews.
  • Establish a school environment for children and families that is experiential and will utilize the latest teaching methodologies and curriculum, with the infusion of technology. There will be an ever-present spirit of co-operation and energy that continuously stimulates the learning experience.
  • Respond to the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Be a warm and caring place, a nurturing environment and institution that children want to attend and a place where they feel at home.
  • Strengthen the students’ awareness of Israel and Jewish issues.
