RECOMMENDATIONS FOR HEALTHY SNACKS
AT BEIT SEFER B’YAHAD/UNITED JEWISH SCHOOL  rev. (7-12-10)

Our classrooms are mini Jewish communities and part of being a Jewish community is celebrating holidays and special occasions. Food is brought into the school setting in an effort to address the needs of our students to have a snack break.  This gives us an opportunity to focus on thankfulness for food, sharing with others, as well as thinking about feeding the hungry.

PARENTS OF STUDENTS WITH A FOOD ALLERGY SHOULD NOTIFY THE TEACHER AND THE SCHOOL DIRECTOR.  To guarantee the health and safety of all our students, our school is now a PEANUT-FREE ZONE.  A healthy snack will be provided by the school.  A fee for this will be included in the tuition for the year.  The following will be the guideline for snacks brought into the classroom.

100% fruit juices (not high-fructose corn syrup drinks) or water

bagel (with or without spreads like cream cheese)

challah

rice cakes or mini rice cakes

fruit or grain muffins

pretzels

graham or animal crackers

fresh seasonal fruit (pre-washed, please!)

carrots, celery, broccoli, or zucchini strips with low fat dip or salad dressing

popcorn

string cheese or cubed cheeses

fruit, nut and/or grain trail mixes  - PEANUT FREE!

What we want to avoid are sweet, sugary foods. We would love to offer a snack that contains some form of protein or natural fibers. If you have questions about the snack please feel free to contact your classroom teacher or the school director.

Kashrut/Kosher Policy

The traditions of each congregation will be respected.  When in Temple Emanuel, UJS will follow the policies of Temple (no mixing of milk and meat, no shellfish or pork).  When in Ahavas Israel, UJS will follow the policies of Ahavas Israel (all food served or distributed must have recognized kosher supervision).  Most gelatins are an animal product and are not eaten by strict vegetarians and those who keep kosher. These foods include marshmallows, jello, and gummy candies.
